Overview

In a single fronted terrace house with a site width of only 5 metres, e+ architecture have designed a family home which looks and feels larger than it actually is.

Controlled by a strict building envelope, the project involved complex negotiations with neighbours and Council to achieve a home suitable for a growing family. The two front rooms of the original house were retained in the project, allowing the addition of a bathroom, laundry, kitchen and family room on the ground floor and a master bedroom, ensuite and study on the first floor.

The family area, integrated with the kitchen, opens to the rear courtyard to create a large entertaining area while upstairs, a small screened balcony off the main bedroom offers a private haven with views of the city skyline. A feature of the living area is a glazed, conservatory style roof which allows the winter sun to stream inside.

Given the small site and restricted building envelope, particular attention had to be paid to light, space and functionality, maximising every inch of available space to its fullest potential.
