VIEW STREET RESIDENCE
A classic case of clients buying a property for the amazing location rather than the bricks and mortar, Eplus was engaged to completely modernize the multi-level, post-war cream brick, tiled roof building. With much discussion around the merits of demolition versus alterations, the project capitalized on the solid brick construction of the existing dwelling as a “starting point” for the new house.
The entire roof was removed and major alterations began. Cut into a steep slope the home comprised of two levels with the upper level half above the level of the street. This provided an exciting opportunity to explore a house that was 50% buried and an arrival that allowed a gradual incline to the main living. A pool and courtyard accessible off the main entry on the lower level was positioned in the front yard, utilizing a commonly wasted external space and completely private from the street, connecting to a lower level family room. This family room and pool is both visually and physically connected via a large north-facing double-height void creating an abundance of light and providing surveillance of the pool from the kitchen on the upper level. The entirety of the upper level is wrapped in a veil of black steel screening offering both solar protection and a level of privacy from the busy inner-city street.
